He gained widespread recognition for his role as Chhantyal in the hit movie Kabaddi and its subsequent sequels. His unique delivery and the popular catchphrase Hait helped him stand out as a performer, making him one of the most recognizable character actors in the country.

Beyond his work in feature films, Tamang is well known for his role as Hanumane in the popular television sitcom Meri Bassai.
